EN: Luxembourg DoD Partners with SES and HITEC to Augment SATCOM Ground Infrastructure
New ground stations procured by the Directorate of Defence will be utilised by Luxembourg Army to improve its resilience by accessing satellite connectivity services via GovSat-1, and ensuring interoperability with WGS.
Luxembourg, 22 February 2024 – The Luxembourg Directorate of Defence (DoD) procured two ground stations following a competitive call for tender to enable the Luxembourg Army to improve its resilience by accessing secure satellite communications services, the DoD, SES and HITEC Luxembourg said today.
The ground stations, which will be installed at the Luxembourg Army’s Military Centre in Diekirch, will be used for Luxembourg’s GovSat-1 satellite services in X- and Military Ka-band frequencies, as well as for the Wideband Global Satcom (WGS) system, the backbone of the satellite communications capability of the U.S. DoD.
The addition of the two new ground stations reinforce resiliency and augment the existing Luxembourg Army satcom infrastructure already built by SES and HITEC Luxembourg 10 years ago, bringing the total number of dedicated antennas to four. The new ground stations unlock the strong potential to scale and add interoperability with the NATO partner systems, in line with the country’s defence strategy for the years to come.

De nouvelles stations sol acquises par la Direction de la Défense seront exploitées par l’Armée luxembourgeoise pour augmenter sa résilience, en la dotant d’un accès à des services de connectivité par le biais du satellite GovSat-1 et en garantissant son interopérabilité avec le système WGS.
Luxembourg, le 22 février 2024 – La Direction de la Défense luxembourgeoise a fait l’acquisition de deux stations sol dans le cadre d’un appel d’offres visant à augmenter la résilience de l’Armée luxembourgeoise, en la dotant d’un accès à des services de télécommunications sécurisées par satellite, ont annoncé ce jour la Direction de la Défense, SES et HITEC Luxembourg.
Ces stations sol seront installées au Centre militaire de l’Armée luxembourgeoise à Diekirch et asservies au satellite luxembourgeois GovSat-1 sur les bandes X et Ka militaire, ainsi qu’au système WGS (Wideband Global Satcom), clé de voûte des capacités satcom du Département américain de la Défense (DoD).
L’ajout de ces deux nouvelles stations sol renforcera la résilience et les performances de l’actuelle infrastructure satcom de l’Armée luxembourgeoise, déjà établie par SES et HITEC Luxembourg il y a dix ans, et portera à quatre le nombre total d’antennes dédiées. Les deux nouvelles débloqueront un important potentiel capacitaire et amélioreront l’interopérabilité avec les systèmes des partenaires de l’OTAN, conformément à la stratégie de défense du Grand-Duché pour les années à venir.

Luxemburg, 22. Februar 2024. Wie die Luxemburger Direktion für Verteidigung (DoD), SES und HITEC Luxembourg heute bekannt gaben, hat die DoD nach einer Ausschreibung zwei neue Bodenstationen angeschafft, um die Widerstandskraft der Luxemburger Streitkräfte durch den sicheren Zugriff auf Satellitenkommunikationsdienste zu verbessern.
Die Bodenstationen, die im militärischen Zentrum der Luxemburger Streitkräfte in Diekirch installiert werden, werden für die GovSat-1-Satellitendienste in den X- und militärischen Ka-Band-Frequenzen ebenso wie für das Wideband Global Satcom (WGS)-System, dem Rückgrat der Satellitenkommunkationsfähigkeiten des US-Verteidigungsministeriums, genutzt.
Die beiden neuen Bodenstationen stärken die Widerstandkraft und verbessern die Satellitenkommunikationsinfrastruktur, die von SES und HITEC Luxembourg bereits vor 10 Jahren aufgebaut wurde. Die Gesamtzahl der speziellen Antennen steigt damit auf vier. Die neuen Bodenstationen eröffnen ein großes Potenzial zur Verbesserung der Interoperabilität mit den Systemen der NATO-Partner, wie in der Verteidigungsstrategie des Landes für die nächsten Jahre vorgesehen.
Die Luxemburger Verteidigungsministerin Yuriko Backes meint dazu: „Der Zugang zu sicheren Satellitenkommunikationssystemen war immer eine der Prioritäten und Stärken unseres Landes, um unsere Verteidigungsfähigkeiten zu verbessern und unsere Verpflichtungen gegenüber der EU und der NATO zu erfüllen.
