LUXEMBOURG INITIATED PROJECT PRESENTED ON THE OCCASION OF ESA COUNCIL IN PARIS
Tracking and tracing of dangerous goods in the medical sector

Did you ever asked yourself what happens to your blood samples or other materials which are used in the medical sector? Most of these samples are transported via road to testing laboratories. Not many people know that a lot of these samples are dangerous goods, because they are potentially infectious. Other samples are very sensitive to temperature and need to be monitored. A new service, called DG-TRAC (Tracking & Tracing of Dangerous Goods in the Medical Sector), was set-up to increase the traceability and monitoring of medical goods during transport and thus to increase the quality of the transports as well as the safety on our roads.
The DG-TRAC service is developed by Luxembourg based partners HITEC Luxembourg, T&E Gefahrgutlogistik AG and Post Luxembourg in the frame of the ESA Integrated Application Programme (ESA IAP). “The goal of the ESA IAP programme is to support the development of new services that use satellite based assets such as satellite navigation and communication”, states Marc SERRES, Head of the Luxembourg ESA delegation. The project started in December 2014. Currently the project is in its pilot phase. The first pilot user is a Luxembourg based hospital which has been working with the service since May 2016. Starting in July 2016, the medical transports of the second pilot user, a German pharmaceutical company, are being traced and monitored through DG-TRAC. The DG-TRAC service ensures the correct execution of a transport accordant with the law, by tracking and monitoring all of the steps involved.
On 3rd November 2016, the DG-TRAC project partners had the honour to demonstrate the service on the occasion of the ESA Council at delegate level in Paris, France. The Council is ESA's governing body and provides the basic policy guidelines within which ESA develops the European space programme. The demonstration included the show-case of a newly designed transport box that includes real-time temperature monitoring, a car kit and a complete transport simulation. “The demand for enhancing quality and safety of medical dangerous goods transport is indisputable. On this ground, ESA’s IAP has supported the setting-up of DG-TRAC, a one stop-shop solution to monitor all the steps involved in medical dangerous good transport which enforces compliance to the regulatory framework while increasing safety. The service is currently under demonstration, and preliminary customers’ feedback reported by the consortium are very positive”, summarises Davide COPPOLA, ESA Integrated Applications.
The commercial launch of the service is planned for January 2017. “We are proud to announce that some commercial leads are already in the pipeline. At the request of customers, an extension of the service is planned, to support the monitoring of very low (below -150OC) temperature transports”, outlines Yves ELSEN, Managing Partner and CEO of HITEC Luxembourg.

THREE DECADES OF INNOVATION
HITEC Luxembourg celebrates 30th company anniversary & supports the “Wëssens-Atelier” Luxembourg, an educational programme promoting science and technology

On February 1st, 2016, HITEC Luxembourg completed its 30th year of business operation. Since the inception in 1986, our objectives remain to adapt to the wishes and needs of our customers. This company philosophy is the basis for successful and sustainable growth of HITEC Luxembourg.
Today, HITEC Luxembourg provides a largely expanded and improved portfolio of high-technology products, innovative solutions, and professional services, designed to address the needs of our private and public sectors customers, both nationally and internationally. The true mark of a company like HITEC Luxembourg is its ability to consistently move forward, while continuously adjusting to the ever changing needs of our clients and responding to the newest developments in technology.
Our company has gone through organisational changes to stay at the forefront of industrial development. We make innovation an integral part of our business operations: the market launch of new products and services, the growth of the teams, the thorough review and critical selection of new growth businesses and the internationalisation of our activities.
The improvements realized over the last three decades would not have been possible without the dedication of everyone who has worked at HITEC Luxembourg since its inception in one role or the other. As we celebrate our thirty years of existence, we are recommitting ourselves to continuously improve and extend our service and product offering.
Our company, as a Luxembourg based undertaking, committed itself to strengthen and promote the national economy through innovation and technology. With respect to this essential philosophy, we live the concept of sustainability since the very beginning: to provide our clients with future-proof and innovative solutions. As a visible sign of this fundamental idea, we are supporting the “Wëssens-Atelier” Luxembourg – an educational programme which intends to fascinate youngsters (age 8-12) with technology. We believe that fostering creativity and curiosity at this early age will lead to innovative thinking grown-ups which can change the world to the better.
We are proud of all we have accomplished together with all our stakeholders, and we are excited and energized as we enter our next decade.
